Volume I of The Mystery of History covers world history from Creation to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Included in Volume I are the chronologically based stories from all around the world. Beginning with the Garden of Eden, stories will spread from Sumer and Babel to Troy, Phoenicia, and Assyria. The study of early civilizations will include King Wu of China and Asoka of India as well as King David, Julius Caesar, and Xerxes of Persia. Above all, a favorite feature of Volume I is the weaving of Bible history with world history. More examples of interesting figures that lived just decades apart include: Joshua and King Tut; Ruth and Helen of Troy; Daniel and Aesop; Ezekiel and Buddha; and Nehemiah and Socrates.
Students are required to read each of those lessons and be prepared to discuss them. The children enjoy this history class as we bring these events to life - sometimes tasting food from that area, acting out the battles, dressing up as our favorite person, bringing in Lego creations that illustrate our topics, etc. This class is structured so that it fits all the different ages and allows the parents to decide how lightly or deeply to go in each lesson. All pretests, tests and exercises (worksheets) are up to the parents to give and grade. The goal is to help the children find a love of history, not by listing the facts and memorizing the dates, but understanding what happened and why that is important.
