Course description:
Chemistry is everywhere and in everything: your cell phone, your body, your clothing, your favorite drink or food. The roots of chemistry can be traced back all the way to the fifth century when a Greek philosopher, Democritus, hypothesized everything was made up of atomos. In the 1600s a physicist by the name of Robert Boyle coined the term elements and hypothesized the world was made up of them. In the 1800s scientists began to discover that an atom is composed of protons, neutrons and electrons. The basis of chemistry lies in how atoms react with each other, specifically how their electrons interact.
My goal is to help the students go beyond just reading the material in the book and regurgitating formulas and concepts in order to pass a test. I want them to understand the concepts and see how and why they are important. Many of the concepts require practice to master and appreciate. Successful completion of this course will set them up to succeed in the freshmen chemistry courses offered at their college of choice. It will also benefit their performance and understanding in the lab component of this course.
I create and grade all assessments given. They will have homework beyond the questions in the book to do on occasion which will reinforce the concepts they are learning. The tests are sent home for them to take. The midterm and final will be given in class.
