Required Textbook: Master Theory Book 1: Beginning Theory Workbook, by Charles S. Peter's & Paul Yoder. I will hand these out on the first day of class.
Prerequisites: An eagerness to learn to read and make music. Students must also be able to read and follow instructions.
Supplies: 2 pencils, a set of erasable colored pencils and a folder with pockets and clasps.
Course Description: This course is for the beginner student who has a love for music and an eagerness to learn how to read and play music. Students will learn to read music, including: note names & locations on the staff, note & rest values, dynamics, and so much more. Students will learn to find the beat of a given piece of music by using their body to feel and keep the beat. We will also learn to play simple childhood songs and Christian hymns using handbells, resonator bells, and BoomWhackers. (Please investigate these awesome musical instruments. There are many great videos on YouTube.)
Students will also have the opportunity to make some fun, homemade musical crafts. Idealy, these will be completed in class and taken home the same day.
There will be homework of a simple worksheet or two, practicing beats, reading notes, etc. Music cannot be learned in a one day a week setting, but can be learned and enjoyed with even a minimum of 10 minutes of practice every day or two. This can be done anywhere and does not have to be done in a formal setting. Practice should be fun!
My goal is to nurture the love of music your child has and take it to a new level of appreciating the technical part of music and turning it into an ability to read and make music as a group. It is also my goal to take part in the End-Of-Year School Program and perhaps also the Christmas Program. It will be my joy and honor to teach your children what music is all about this school year.
