Course Description: How do elections work? What does the President do all day? Who decides where stop signs go? What is Labor Day? Uncle Sam and You is a one-year civics course that answers these questions and many more. Designed for students in grades 6-8, lessons focus on America’s founding documents, branches of government, patriotic symbols, voting, the election process, Washington, D.C., the presidency, how Congress works, American holidays, and aspects of federal, state, and local government.

Course Objectives

Each full-color unit includes several short lessons to read that explains the topic to the student; chapters feature both modern and historical photographs and illustrations. Lessons conclude with a variety of subject-based activity ideas that relate to answering questions in the student handbook for each lesson the student reads that week. There are also supplemental activities in the book for each lesson, some weeks I will assign some of the supplemental activities, but you as the parent can also do them each week if you want more work.

Assignments/Quizzes/Exams

Fifteen units are included in each text (Part 1 & 2), with four lessons in each unit. Depending on how many activities are assigned, students will need 45-90 minutes per lesson. However, the back of each book includes fifteen optional lessons on America’s patriotic holidays. If five lessons per week are desired, the holiday lessons can be used as a fifth lesson or for other occasions. A total of 150 lessons/30 weeks of lessons are provided. Students will read the text and complete student activities at home throughout the week. Thursday course work will include class lectures, activities, and group discussion. We will also have interactive, hands-on activities such as a class election, mock court trial and also meeting people from positions within the government/civics world.

There are opportunities for graded components of the course, should parents decide to monitor and notate completed work, but I will not be grading. We will go over the answers each week for the questions in the student workbook and then take the unit tests. We will also go over the answers to the test together, I will allow the student to self-grade unless you let me know otherwise for your student. The only grade I will provide is a participation grade for the year that you can compile with the tests from each week if you would like to assess a grade for your student for this class.
