Class & Home Expectations:
Travel back in time to early United States history! This theme-based writing curriculum allows students to delve into the excitement of explorers, battles, land expansion, famous ships, and founding fathers while learning to write with the Structure and Style® writing method. Offering a full year of instruction for students in grades 6–6, these lessons cover all nine IEW Units.
Literature suggestions for family read-alouds or independent reading are also included, but will not be covered in class.
Class time will be used to instruct students in the IEW methods of writing with Structure and Style®. During the week, students will be expected to write papers, complete assignments, and study vocabulary. Parents will be expected to assist students in the writing process (if needed), serve as “editors”, and complete the checklist with students for final drafts. Students and parents will need to have access to Google Classroom to check assignments and posted announcements.
Grading:
➢ Polished Papers (60%)
➢ Prominent Person Research and Presentation (20%) Each student will choose a historical person from the 17th-21st century to research and present. A list of historical figures will be given for students to choose the person they wish to represent. Students are encouraged to “get into character” and dress in costume, however, costumes are not required during the presentation. Presentations are scheduled tentatively for March/April. Parents are welcome to attend.
➢ Vocabulary Quizzes (10%) Quizzes will be given in class or through Google Classroom.
➢ Class Participation (10%) Students should expect to participate respectfully in class each week by reading papers, answering questions, offering ideas, and paying attention to the class instruction and discussions. CELL PHONES or other digital devices are not permitted to be used during class.
Tickets:
Tickets will be given to students as they participate in class, do something particularly well, and include vocabulary in their papers. At the end of each semester, our class will celebrate with an auction in which students can “spend” their tickets on small items.
