Course Description: South Carolina History provides an overview of our state’s geographic, natural, cultural, political, social, and economic history with a particular emphasis on influential individuals and events that shaped South Carolina into the dynamic community it has become today, all taught from a Christian worldview. In addition to an extensive survey of the state’s history, this course will offer a uniquely local perspective on Lowcountry history as well. With the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution drawing near, the era leading up to, during, and immediately following the Revolution will receive special emphasis, including the debate on ratification of the Constitution in South Carolina and a documentary review of state Constitutions of 1776, 1778, 1790, 1846, and 1895, which will underscore the pervasive prevalence of religious freedom in South Carolina from its inception. The course will bring our history right up to the present, covering the modernization of the state’s economy and the importance of South Carolina to the nation and the world.
