Our goal is to maximize retention of the "Big Ideas" within scripture by making it come alive. Students will take home their copy of the Bible book page to be colored and then return it to the teacher the following week in class.  At the end of the year, your child will have their own collection of New Testament pictures in a notebook and will know the keyword (the "Big Idea") for each book of the New Testament. This is a fun and active class!

Class description:  Does your child know the letter sounds but is struggling to take off reading independently? The Early Readers class is an in depth review of basic phonics skills.  This class teaches decoding skills by direct instruction.  Students will study the patterns and rules of the English language, including vowel and consonant sounds, syllable rules, punctuation, homophones, diagrams, and consonant blends.   We will work to recognize often used words by sight.  Students will receive instruction in how to correctly divide and sound out syllables in new or longer words.  This fun and engaging class will offer practice for students encountering language difficulties and will endeavor to offer unique remedial solutions for reluctant or struggling young readers.
Students enrolled in this class must have already completed a basic introduction to phonics.  This is not a class for first introduction to letter sounds.  Also, this class will probably move too slowly for students who are already fluent readers.

Reading is a natural outgrowth of spelling instruction.

Reading Comprehension
Instructor: Tiffany Norwood
Email: tnorwood11@ hotmail.com
Phone:715-768-5926
Grades: 3rd-6th grade
Monthly Cost: $25
Material Cost: $20
Materials: 1/2 or 1 inch binder

Course Description: Let's learn to dig deep when reading! For this class your child must be able to read and write on his/her own. I am not teaching how to read but building comprehension skills, which must come after learning to read.
This class will cover reading comprehension skills. These skills are the foundation of good reading comprehension. It will be beneficial for children beginning these skills or as a review for children who already know these skills. Students will be introduced to the skill, then taught how to apply the skill while reading.
We will learn through a multi sensory approach so come ready to interact and learn.

Skills are: genre, author’s purpose, narrative elements, relating to text, prediction, fact and opinion, sequencing, compare/contrast, problem/solution, supporting details, cause and effect, main idea, context clues, character analysis, inferences, theme/moral, summarizing, author’s style/tone, and figurative language. We will go over these skills the first half of the year through different texts. The second half of the year we will dig deeper using all of these skills as we read 3-4 different chapter books.

I rotate the books we use: This year I plan to use Balto(It is ok if your child has read this. I will use this as an easy book to teach the skills in depth), Frindle, In Grandma’s Attic, Freedom Crossing, and Ben & Me.
*I may switch out a book based on the class level and/or what the students have read. You will receive the final list in August.

Material Fees: $25
Monthly Tuition: $25

Holy History Illustrated JUNIOR is the “big picture” – a foundational Bible course for the upper elementary ages. It helps students see how the whole bible fits together. This class will teach the major concepts, events, and characters of each book of the New Testament through reading, listening, drawing and hand motions. An overview of each book is illustrated on a single page. By the time the class is finished, students will have both an illustration on a page and an imprint on their minds. *Holy History Jr. bridges the gap between the Bible 4 Kids class and the older Holy History Illustrated class. * It is a less in-depth study than the older Holy History, but follows the same format. This class is creative, fun, memorable way to study the Bible!

Mystery of History 2

Supplies and Books required: The Mystery of History Volume II: The Early Church and the Middle Ages by Linda Lacour Hobar

Course Description:  from Pentecost to the printing press
Volume 2 of The Mystery of History covers world history from the early church to the Middle Ages.  Included in this volume are the chronologically based stories from all around the world including St. Patrick delivering the gospel to Ireland, the Western Roman Empire falling in Europe, Mohammed introducing Islam to the world about a decade after King Arthur rides with his knights, the Vikings ravaging parts of Europe while the Maori settle New Zealand and Joan of Arc tragically burning at the stake while the Incas were building their golden empire in South America.
Students are required to read each of the assigned lessons per week, and be prepared to discuss them. The children will enjoy hands on history as we bring these events to life - sometimes tasting food from that area, acting out the battles, bringing in Lego creations that illustrate our topics, playing games, and more! This class is structured so that it fits all the different ages and allows the parents to decide how lightly or deeply to go in each lesson. All pretests, tests and exercises (worksheets) are up to the parents to give and grade. The goal is to help the children find a love of history, not by listing the facts and memorizing the dates, but understanding what happened and why that is important. Monthly Cost(s): $25

Supplies: 2 mechanical pencils and a set of erasable colored pencils which includes the 7 colors of the rainbow and pink.

Course Description: This course is for the beginner student who has a love for music and an eagerness to learn how to read and play music. Students will learn to read music, including, but not limited to: note names & locations on the staff, note & rest values, rhythms, dynamics, and so much more. Students will learn how to find the beat of a given piece of music by feeling the beat and clapping, snapping, and tapping their foot to keep the music’s beat. We will also learn how to play simple childhood songs and Christian hymns/music using children's handbells and the BoomWhacker instrument. (Please feel free to investigate these awesome musical instruments. There are many great videos on YouTube.)

Students will also have the opportunity to make some fun, homemade musical crafts. Idealy, these will be completed in class and taken home the same day.
There will be homework in this course of a simple worksheet or two, practicing beats of music, etc. Music cannot be learned in a only one day a week setting, but it can be learned and enjoyed with even a minimum of 10 minutes of practice every other day or two. This can be done in the car and does not have to be done in a formal setting. Practice should be fun!

My goal is to nurture the love of music your child has and take it to a new level that they are able to appreciate the technical part of music and turning it into the ability to read and make music as a group. It is also my goal to take part in the End-Of-Year School Program and perhaps also the Christmas Program. It will be my joy and honor to teach your children what music is all about this school year.

Does your child like to sing and perform? We will perform a junior Broadway musical in the spring of 2021. Auditions are required and will occur the first day of class. For this, students will need to perform a song and a one-minute monologue. This class requires participation and COMMITMENT from both the young actor and parent. We strive to make the best possible show, but we need parents and students to be connected and engaged! We use our FACEBOOK GROUP to communicate. This is REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION. We offer two class periods, AM and PM. These classes will form two separate casts who will perform the same musical on the same show dates having different show times. The morning class will meet from 8:30-9:50 am and the afternoon class will meet from 1:10-2:30 pm.

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION!
Junior Musical Theatre fills up quickly. Following is the protocol for registration. When SHEEP registration opens, you must send an email to Laurie Grinnell at housetheatreinc@gmail.com stating your interest and which class you prefer (morning, afternoon, or either if you’re flexible). Then submit your official SHEEP class registration per usual. You can not officially register for Musical Theatre until a slot has been confirmed by Laurie. Students will be given available slots or placed on a wait list based on the order in which emails are received (pending confirmation of your official SHEEP registration).
If your official registration with SHEEP is not confirmed by April 21, your child’s place will be offered to the next child on the list. This is why it is essential that you send an email and submit your SHEEP registration as soon as possible. Your child’s slot will be confirmed via email by late April.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be mandatory Saturday rehearsals at Riverbluff Church during the second semester (times TBD). We will also schedule rehearsals at Riverbluff during our regularly scheduled Thursday class time. To compensate for travel time, the morning class rehearsals will begin at 8:00 AM, and the afternoon class rehearsals will last until 3:00 PM. Performances are scheduled mid-April. There will be a small admission fee for each performance. Parents are responsible for costumes and fees for costumes.

Course Description: We all experience conflict—at every age and stage of life. Some of us choose to try to avoid it. Some of us go on the attack, get angry, and explode. Some of us are able to work it out. But what is God’s plan for handling conflict? This is the question we will answer as we seek to become peacemakers.
This class is built around the book The Young Peacemaker by Corlette Sande. The Young Peacemaker teaches children how to prevent and resolve conflict in a constructive and biblically faithful manner. We will emphasize the principles of confession, forgiveness, communication, and character development. Some of the questions we will answer include: What is at the heart of conflict? Is it possible to honor God in conflict? How can you take responsibility for your part in a conflict? How can we mend relationships after conflict?
The goal in this class will be for your children to learn to better understand conflict, to respond to conflict in a biblical, God honoring way, and to learn practical ways to prevent conflict. There will be opportunities for scripture memorization, writing and acting out skits dealing with specific conflict situations, fun games and activities with real life applications, and thoughtful discussion. Let’s learn how to be peacemakers!
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” –Romans 12:18

You can read more about The Young Peacemaker here:
 https://rw360.org/the-young-peacemaker/

You can read the author’s motivation behind the creation of these materials here: https://rw360.org/a-word-from-the-author/

There is no textbook required for this class. Your materials fee covers the cost for reproducing the student activity booklets students will receive with each new lesson. These booklets include a cartoon/comic version of the story from each lesson, diagrams that visually reinforce key points, and activities and personal applications that students can work on at home during the week to further reinforce the lesson.
