Rhoton: Mystery of History Volume III
Crowfield, Friday
Instructor: Melissa Rhoton
Email: melissa@sheep.education
Grades: 4th - 8th
Tuition: $30
Material Fee: $30
Textbook Requirements: Mystery of History Volume III, The Renaissance, Reformation, and Growth of Nations Student Reader by Linda Lacour Hobar
Course Description: Volume 3 of The Mystery of History covers world history from the Renaissance, Reformation and the Growth of Nations which were years of growth and change for both the world and the church. The Mystery of History Volume III presents the years 1455 - 1707 through Christ-centered lens, exploring the backdrop to and significance of major cultural and historical people and events, alongside these events in the history of Christianity. Some include The Wars of the Roses, Christopher Columbus, Michelangelo, Martin Luther and the “Ninety-five Theses”, Henry VIII, John Clavin, William Tyndale, Mary Tudor “Bloody Mary”, Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare, Pocahontas, Galileo, Rembrandt, Sir Isaac Newton, The Salem Witch Trials, and more!
Students are required to read three lessons per week, and be prepared to discuss them in class.
The children will enjoy hands on history as we bring these events to life - sometimes tasting food from that country/culture, acting out the events, playing games, crafts and more! This class is structured to fit all ages and allows the parents to decide how lightly or deeply to go into each lesson.
All pretests, tests and exercises (worksheets) are up to the parent to give and grade, if desired. The goal of this class is to help children find a love of history, not by listing the facts and memorizing the dates, but understanding what happened and why it is important. It is not necessary to complete Volume II before Volume III.

Used in class are handbells, hand chimes and resonator bells.
Students will also have the opportunity to make some fun, homemade musical crafts. Ideally, these will be completed in class and taken home the same day.
There will be homework many weeks ranging from worksheets to simply practicing beats and reading music, etc. Music cannot be learned in a one day a week setting but can be learned and enjoyed with even a minimum of 10 minutes of practice every day or two. This can be done anywhere from the comfort of the couch to the convenience of a vehicle, not merely a formal setting. Practice should be fun!
My goal is to nurture the love of music your child has and take it to a new level of appreciating the technical part of music and turning it into an ability to make music as a group. It will be my joy and honor to teach your children what music is all about this school year.
